Wye Tour 2013 - Day 2 - The Brecon Mountain Railway

Saturday 4 May 2013

We had some debate about today's trip. We thought about "The Big Pit" but most of the group had been there on a previous Y and C trip. So we settled on The Brecon Mountain Railway. This proved a good choice, not just for the attraction but also the road to get there!

It was a bit drizzly so no shorts today as we set of on the A40, passing the start of The Kyrle Trial and the entry to some of its early sections as we passed into Wales. The road up to The Heads the Valleys had  a very long climb of a couple of miles and we were pleased that we manged to keep it in top until just before the top.

Arriving at the railway it was time to dig out the waterproofs although they wren't necessary of you stayed inside the rather swish carriages.

The railway ran alongside The Pontsticill Reservoir and we were immediately impressed how clean and maintained everything was.The track was well laid and our locomotive, 1930 Baldwin No 2 was truely spectacular, certanly a change from some of the ex industrial tanks that many preserved railways use.

On the way back we dropped by Ross town centre for a look round. We couldn't see anywhere spectacular to eat so stuck to the Beefeater next to the Premier Inn again as we had enjoyed it the night before.
